What would you have done?

Postby Super Dave 32 » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:45 am

Here's a situation that happened to me a couple of years ago and I'm curious as to what you guys would have done. Here in Oklahoma we get 3 total toms with a limit of two birds per county. I'm walking through the woods chasing gobblers and hear a terrible fight going on. I walk toward the commotion and find two big toms locked in a death match. They are both nice, mature gobblers with nice spurs and nice beards. They have their necks intertwined and are fighting each other so hard that I literally was able to walk out of the woods to within about 15 yards of them.

I could have easily killed both with one shot. Would you have taken the shot? Why?

That's pretty cool to come across something like that. I guess it depends if you want to end your hunting in the county early with a 2 bird kill. I love the actual hunt, but also know 2 in the hand is better then 50 walking away. That's a tough call. Something like that I would want to sit back and watch, but I would also like to shoot.

Depends if i am alone or if my partner is willing to pack one of them out for me.40 plus pounds of gobbler would not be easy to pack out by yourself.Of course i hunt better then a mile from the road so i would wait till they broke up plus in mo you can't kill 2 birds in one day.Except the 3 week and not forsure if you can then .

I would have waited until they broke apart because in Mo. you can only kill 1 bird per day and that includes the 3rd week. But if it was legal I sure would have!!!

I didn't take the shot. The thoughts that ran through my head were, "Man, I shoot these two, then i'm done" Also I was thinking, "How sporting is it to kill both of these guys when they have no clue that I'm here"

That said, I wish that I would have taken the shot. Here's what I would have done -- had them both mounted in the same position that they were with their necks twisted around each other. How cool would that mount be?

Now that would be one super cool mount and conversation piece.
