Upright hen or feeding hen?

Postby JP_hntnfsh » Thu Mar 21, 2013 7:25 pm

I I am thinking of purchasing another hen decoy. Hopefully something of quality...not sure but thought I would throw this out. When you all just us hen decoys, would you use an upright hen or a feeding hen? Which one is more effective in your opinion? I guess I leaning more towards the upright but worried that it might make the toms on alert more being upright like that...any experience on this?

I like feeding hens. They dont seem so nervous.

I'm with Doc on this one. I think there is more you can do with a feeding hen.

I like & use both..... I used a upright pose for years and never had any problems. The turkeys would walk up to it!
These days, when /if I use all three decoys. I place the upright with my gobbler about ten yards " directly behind her". Then the feeding hen about 20 yards off to the side...like she's not paying any attention to the other two.... Never have had a turkey move towards the feeding hen, always walks up to the gobbler

I appreciate the comments and not that I didn't listen but I bought an upright hen. I looked at the old stuff and I felt like the feeder that I have will do for another year but the quality of the upright needed updating. Next question is jake or no jake. I have never used a jake decoy and I am curious to see how it would work. Do you think that a jake and hen combo works well through the whole season or would you say early over late or vise versa? This year I did not get drawn so I am buying An over the counter for the last couple seasons...typically the month of May or the later part of May.

I used a hen/jake combo for many years. They would very well in my neck of the woods.Just switched from hen/jake to hen/strutter last year and that works well too. I tend to use the hen & gobble decoy all season long.... if it's workin, don't change,if the turkeys act a little timid, may back off with the decoys.
