youth hunter gun help please

Now that my girls are turkey hunting with me I want to get the most out of a gun. Youth hunting is definitely a challenge. Getting birds into gun range can be difficult. Last year my then 11 year old daughter killed a nice bird at 15 yards with a Remington youth model 20 guage using an undertaker choke with 3" magnum blend. That combo seems to pattern good to about 30-35 yards. I just got back from hunting in Kansas and realized I left the magnum blend at home so I had to use what i had which was Winchester supreme 3" number 5's. I patterned the Winchester's last year and they are horrible compared to magnum blend. We had a long beard come to 43 yards and hung up leaving us with no shot.

I guess my question would be this. Can I get a 40 yard gun out of the Remington 20 youth model with right choke/shell combo?
What about a 12 guage with 2 3/4" Hevi shot? I must keep recoil in mind.

There is absolutely no need for a 12 gauge.. With todays loads and chokes in the 20 they will easily kill to 40 yards.. I am a huge fan of the Federal HW 7s in a 3 inch.. Their penetration is un matched and they pattern very well.. With that being said the recoil on them with 1.5oz of shot is pretty stout.. I have not shot the 20g Mag Blend but with there ramped up velocity I imagine they are as well.. Federal also loads the 7s in a 2 3/4 with 1 1/8 oz of shot and some are getting good patterns at 40..

As for the Mag Blend, I have never seen the need to shoot them.. A chain is only strong as its weakest link and although they do contain 5s for increased penetration, those 5s and 6s take the place of what could be 7s thus limiting the overall pellet count and thus pattern density.. The Hevi 13 7s are a wonderful youth load.. They have very little recoil and also very forgiving of choke design.. I did a bunch of shooting a few years back with a variety of chokes and that little undertaker you had put up wonderful even forgiving patterns with the H 13 7s as well as the Fed HW 7s.. Not overly dense, 115 ish in a 10 inch circle at 40 but sho nuff 40 yard killers..

Another choke I would try is the Tru Glo SSX 550.. Out of the short and long barreled 870s it has thrown the best patterns with both H 13 7s and Fed HW 7s..

My first thought is get a jellyhead. or something tight that patterns good. My second thought is to put a 26" barrel on it. and it will still fit her. I guess she could use either your 12ga or you get her, her own and shorten it to fit. My daughters 870 youth 20 ga wont kill a turkey at 30 yard with the truglo choke. but 30 35 is a dead bird with the jellyhead. I don't think it will reach 40. so same problem here as you have. I don't want to pay 8 bux per shot for her. but it may be worth it in the long run. Then on the other hand she killed two turkeys one with my 12 bps 2 3/4" shells at 25 yards. and one with her 870 youth with 3"#5's at 20 yards. at age 13 and 14. now she is graduating high school next month and has not cared about hunting the last few years. Gauge us more or less irrelivent these days for turkey hunting. I know a guy who might be on the forum named Hawglips that use 12ga to 410ga on turkeys. He uses #9 18 g/cc tungsten shot with all loadings over an ounce. Now how he fits over an ounce of shot into a 410 is beyond me. I am thinking about a first gun for my boys 11 & 13 but leaning single shot. There are some pretty good Huglus in a youth size. The CZ version is the Cottontail for 225. A nice little auto for a kid is the Franchi 48 AL I know it comes in a 20 gauge short stock.
